Your assignment for Tuesday is to write a “bad news” business letter on the following topic:
As the Chief Executive Officer of the Sunshine Shoe Shine Company, it is your responsibility to deal with employee requests for salary increases. A very loyal employee, Barbara Smith, has recently contacted your for a salary increase of 8%. She is currently making 45,000 a year as the company’s Senior Salesperson.
Barbara argues that, as she has consistently outperformed every other salesperson in the company, she deserves a raise that reflects her value to Sunshine Shoe Shine. Barbara's sales records are, on average, 23% higher than the sales of other employees. She is demanding an immediate pay increase, as well as a larger office and her own secretary.
Times are tough for Sunshine Shoe Shine. The company has recently been dropped by Guy Jones’ Gulper’s Gas Station Chain. Employees like Barbara are going to be crucial to the survival of the company into the summer months. You cannot afford to give her the raise, and you cannot afford to offend her. Your situation is further complicated by the fact that, while Barbara is an excellent sales person, she only has a high school education, and has limited literacy skills.
