1) Last time we talked about the four kinds of assertions:
a. Fact: Can be verified
b. Opinion: Judgment based on facts
c. Belief: Judgment based on personal or cultural values
d. Prejudice: Judgment based on insufficient or unexamined evidence.
2) For today, I asked you to read _Children Need To Play, Not Compete_ by Jessica Statsky.
A) What is Statsky arguing? A Fact, opinion, belief, or prejudice? How do you know?
B) She supports her argument with evidence. What is the evidence?
C) There are basically five kinds of evidence.
a. Fact
b. Statistic
c. Specific Example
d. Expert Opinion
e. Appeal to a reader’s beliefs or needs
Different kinds of evidence can be used in different ways, and it makes sense for you to have different kinds of evidence in an argument.
