MID-TERM ASSIGNMENT FOR ENGLISH 221 Business Communications
DUE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, FEB 29 2008
I would like you to write a two page business letter – one which uses headers, bullet points, and other appropriate formatting devices – on the following topic:
Your company, Sunshine Shoe Shine, has a communication problem. For years, you have used a top-down management style to communicate information between higher and lower levels of the company. In your letter, you are to imagine that you have recently been promoted to CEO of Sunshine Shoe Shine. You are writing a general letter to all your employees letting them know that the company is going to shift into a Total Quality Management system. You need to explain the benefits of this system, and how it will be implemented in the company.
To do this, I want you to explain how Total Quality Management will make all three major channels of communication easier for employees, and how it will also help people become more comfortable with new kinds of communication technology, such as e-mail and text messaging.
To do this assignment, I would review the readings we did on "downward" communication and Total Quality Management. I would also review the sections on the three major channels of communication, and how to write a business letter. You can have until Friday to e-mail me theassignment.
Good Luck,Adam

Elements of Fiction
We have discussed: Character and Point of View
Today we will discuss: Plot and Structure
Part 1)
Plot: The plot consists of the major events that make up a story. In many short stories, these events are linked by _causal relationships_.
A causal relationship exists when one events results in the occurrence of another event. For example, because I do not have any money, I do not get to buy lunch today.
Typically, plots detail a conflict, or struggle, between people, places, or things.
They generally begin with exposition, or background information.
Plots tend to reach a moment of "crisis," or climax, which is followed by a resolution or denouement.
Part 2)
Frank O’Conner’s Guests of The Nation
Let’s begin with the important Specific Details:
What is the plot?
What are the causal relationships?
What is the crisis?
What is the resolution?

English 221 Bad News Business Letter Homework Assignment
English 221 Bad News Business Letter Homework Assignment:
Your assignment for Tuesday is to write a “bad news” business letter on the following topic:
As the Chief Executive Officer of the Sunshine Shoe Shine Company, it is your responsibility to deal with employee requests for salary increases. A very loyal employee, Barbara Smith, has recently contacted your for a salary increase of 8%. She is currently making 45,000 a year as the company’s Senior Salesperson.
Barbara argues that, as she has consistently outperformed every other salesperson in the company, she deserves a raise that reflects her value to Sunshine Shoe Shine. Barbara's sales records are, on average, 23% higher than the sales of other employees. She is demanding an immediate pay increase, as well as a larger office and her own secretary.
Times are tough for Sunshine Shoe Shine. The company has recently been dropped by Guy Jones’ Gulper’s Gas Station Chain. Employees like Barbara are going to be crucial to the survival of the company into the summer months. You cannot afford to give her the raise, and you cannot afford to offend her. Your situation is further complicated by the fact that, while Barbara is an excellent sales person, she only has a high school education, and has limited literacy skills.
Good Luck,

You do not need to use any specific quotes here. You are just setting the reader up so that they will be able to understand what comes next.
Value: 10pts
2) Your thesis paragraph: Begin with your contestable thesis. Your thesis is what you will be arguing about the poem. It is the idea or notion that you are going to try to convince the reader to believe. Follow your thesis up with at least three specific examples from the poem that you believe support your point. Explain each of these examples in a sentence or two. There is no need for heavy quoting in this paragraph. You are just setting the foundation for your paper.
Value: 10 pts
3) 1st Body Paragraph. Here you are going to begin by reminding the reader of the 1st example you just mentioned to support your thesis. Basically, you are repeating that sentence, but rewording it slightly. Next, present a quote from the poem that supports your point. Don’t include an extensive quote, a line or two will do. Next, explain in detail –three to four sentences – exactly how the quote supports your thesis.
Value: 10pts
4) Find similar evidence in the poem that supports your thesis in the same way, then include another body paragraph focusing on that evidence that follows the same format as your previous body paragraph. If you cannot find this evidence, move on to the next paragraph.
Value: 10 pts
5) Here you are going to begin by reminding the reader of the 2nd example you mentioned in your thesis paragraph. Basically, you are repeating that sentence, but rewording it slightly. Next, present a quote from the poem that supports your point. Don’t include an extensive quote, a line or two will do. Next, explain in detail – three to four sentences – exactly how the quote supports your thesis.

6) Find similar evidence in the poem that supports your thesis in the same way, then include another body paragraph focusing on that evidence that follows the same format as your previous body paragraph. If you cannot find this evidence, move on to the next paragraph.
Value: 10 pts
7) 3rd Body Paragraph. Here you are going to begin by reminding the reader of the 3rd example you mentioned in your thesis paragraph. Basically, you are repeating that sentence, but rewording it slightly. Next, present a quote from the poem that supports your point. Don’t include an extensive quote, a line or two will do. Next, explain in detail –three to four sentences – exactly how the quote supports your thesis.
Value: 10 pts
8) Find similar evidence in the poem that supports your thesis in the same way, then include another body paragraph focusing on that evidence that follows the same format as your previous body paragraph. If you cannot find this evidence, move on to the next paragraph.
Value 10 pts
9) Summary. In the summary, you need to restate your thesis, then restate each of the points that you have used to support your thesis.
